Base 8 Science Week

We have loved science week in Base 8. We completed a scavenger hunt to find different materials in and around school, classified them by their properties and designed an experiment to find out what materials are waterproof and Mrs Gilbert got a little bit wet!. Some new words that we have learned are ‘transparent, opaque, absorbent, translucent , waterproof’. It will be great to use them at home to reinforce their meanings.

DT in Base 2

Last week in DT, Base 2 learned a variety of new skills in woodwork and made mechanical toys from wood.

During the lesson, children learned to use woodworking tools safely and correctly with the help of the staff in the room.

They learned to measure, mark and check the accuracy of the jelutong and dowel pieces that they needed to cut and also to use a bench hook effectively and safely.

Children learned that saws have sharp teeth and can be dangerous if not used properly.

Base 8 and Numbers

Base 8 have been learning about how to use the part-whole model maths and loved using playdough to help them understand it more.

When you get the playdough out at home – ask the children to show you how to do it!

Pyramids with Base 8

As part of our ‘World Wonders’ topic we loved learning about the pyramids in Egypt. We had great fun learning about the ancient wonders, before creating our own pyramid. The children were particularly surprised to learn that the real meaning of ‘ancient’ meant much older than Mrs Gilbert and they will have a house point awaiting them on Monday if they can recall what ‘ancient wonder’ refers to.

Reception Portraits

Reception have been looking at similarities and differences between themselves and others. We have used paint and felt tips to create these super self portraits! I think you can recognise most of the children even without the name labels !

Year One and the Greedy Gator!

Base 8 took Maths outside this week to learn greater and less than.

They had a little help from the Greedy Gator to help them remember how to write the symbol.

You can help your children with greater than and less than at home by using this video link:

Welcome Back!

For the last few months, we have been using the school blogs to keep the children in touch with school and to let us know what they have been up to on lockdown or in school if they were able to return in June. We loved seeing everything the children were doing. It was great to keep up with the work the children were doing as well as seeing the fun they were having outdoors and in the kitchen (lots of lovely baking going on!) But most importantly, we hope it gave the children and the staff a continued link with school.

The last few weeks have been busy with new arrangements for opening school and the children have settled in well and are getting used to all the new arrangements.

Starting this week, we plan to start using the blogs again to keep up with what is going on in the classrooms and show you some of the learning that is taking place across the school.

Watch this space!
