Year 5 Fitness Friday!

Every Friday, Year 5 do Fitness with Mrs Harvey.  All the classes have a fitness session with her and we will blog more of these over the coming weeks.

Year 5 children run either 7, 11 or 14 laps building up over time.  7 equates to a mile, 11 to a mile and a half and 14 to two miles.

Records are kept in the classroom and all the children aim to have run a half marathon or a marathon by the end of the school year.

All the children love their fitness sessions with Mrs Harvey and she has her own unique way of making fitness fun!

We will keep you posted with their progress!

Base 2 PE

In PE today, Base 2 have been learning gymnastics.

Working with a partner in a small group, using floor and mats, they have been creating and performing a sequence of at least 8 elements.  e.g a combination of asymmetrical shapes and balances with symmetrical rolling and jumping actions.

The sequence should include changes of direction and level and incorporate mirroring and matching shapes and balances.

I watched for a while and some of the ideas were really creative.  Sadly my photography is not so – some of my “action” photos are lacking in clarity, but hopefully you will get the idea of what the children have been working on!

Base 3 Maths

This morning Base 3 are recapping their topic of Time.

They are currently doing a test and then will work together to look at the answers and do some practical work connected to this.

The purpose of this is to identify what children already know about time.

If you want to help your children revise this at home, you can work with them to:

  • Know the number of minutes in an hour;
  • Practice how to sequence intervals of time;
  • Practice quarter past and quarter to the hour.

Base 1 Science -Virtual Reality

The KS2 children have taken part in a Virtual Reality day today.

Base 1 were the first children to take part and used the headsets to learn about the respiratory system.

Back in class they followed up the demonstration by learning how oxygen travels through the body.  They have done this by creating comic strips.

At the end of the lesson they should be able to:

  • Explain how oxygen moves around the respiratory system using the correct scientific terms;
  • Know the function of the respiratory system and
  • Understand that the respiratory system works alongside the circulatory system to transport oxygen and waste products around our body.

It’s a nice day for planting!

Reception children have been outside this morning planting carrots and onions.

They have been working on predictions and after doing some planting have been asked to predict what plants need to grow and how long will it take for them to change.

There were some lovely answers.

“I know that it turns into a seedling when it starts to grow”

“We need to wait for summer and rain”

“They can grow flowers and food”

“They will need water to grow”

And my personal favourite

“It will take a long time!”

In the coming weeks, children will be planting potatoes outside too, with a view to entering them in the Newport Show schools competition – how exciting!

Yesterday was the first planning session and we have included some photographs to show you the beginnings of the project.

Base 6 Science

Today in Science, Base 6 have been looking at sound.

Children have carried out a Sound Survey and have looked at different sounds that are made around the school.

They have worked in groups, visiting different areas of the school. One member of each group had a clipboard and pen and noted their findings.

Once they were back in class, they were given the Sound Survey to complete.

Examples of the sounds they heard were typing and talking in the office and plates banging in the kitchen. They also went outside and heard sounds like the wind blowing through the trees.

They were asked to describe the sounds that they could hear in each area and what was vibrating to make each sound.

We are sure the children would like to tell you about their survey, and perhaps you could do your own survey at home.

Reception and KS1 RE

Reception, Year One and Year Two have visited the Sikh Gurdwara today.

We were welcomed in and shown where Sikhs pray, and we heard about what is important in a Sikh person’s life.

We had the opportunity to listen to a reading from the special Sikh book which we learnt is called the Guru Granth Sahib.
