One of our favourite days of the year! Thank you to everyone who has made the effort to dress up – as usual the school is looking very colourful – there are some great costumes around the place!
We had a special assembly so that children could look at each other’s costumes and the staff were tasked with the difficult decision of picking first, second and third in each base.
During the day, children will have some time working on different book based tasks in their bases:
Year One are working on number bonds to 10.
Yesterday the children worked in groups outside on the playground. They each had a number and had to stand next to someone to make their number bond. This was a fun activity and really helped the children understand the number bonds.
Following on from that, today they are working in class to solve word problems using their knowledge of number bonds to 10.
The aims of the lesson are:
It would be great if you could work on number bonds to 10 with the children at home to help them with their learning!
Children in Reception and KS1 at Moorfield regularly walk over to Buttercross Court in Newport to spend some time with the older members of our community.
Around once a month, the staff take a different group of children over to spend time with the residents. We are not sure who likes it more, the children, the residents or the staff watching the fun that the children have!
This week they played Jenga, dominoes and draughts and were fascinated by the yoyo skills of one of the residents!
We are looking forward to the next visit already!
One of the most important jobs in Reception is to nurture a love of reading.
To this end, the children have been helping us to make new reading areas both inside and outside the classroom.
Inside, we have a reading garden with cushions and beanbags. The children are currently painting flowers which will also decorate the area.
Outdoors, we have our “Wild about Reading” Area – it is covered in camouflage and has a bookcase made from a pallet to make it more exciting – take a look at the photographs!
The new areas are very popular and children are enjoying fiction and non-fiction books.
As well as encouraging children to read more, the new areas are also great for the their social development. There is a noticeable impact during reading time when children have been sharing books with each other and talking about them with their friends.

This afternoon the children in Base 1 have been learning about understanding texture in a piece of music.
They have used a graphic score and a soundscape to describe an African Thunderstorm.
They were so pleased with it, they came round and asked me to add it to the blog.
Unfortunately, the video won’t load but it is on Twitter for you to see.
We love it and hope you do too!

Roman – we are so pleased to see you making such good progress with your times table knowledge! Your hard work at school and at home is paying off!

Lexi and Kyra – You have worked really hard this week in Maths, finding fractions of amounts. It has been lovely to see your confidence and independence shine!

Tegan – you have a brilliant attitude and work hard at everything you do.

Martha – you always try your best and you are making a real improvement with your reading. You are polite and helpful and a great member of Base 3!

Lyndon – we have noticed a real improvement in your attitude to work and this is shown in the quality of the work you are producing – keep it up!

We are so pleased with the way that you have participated in our algebra lessons this week. Well done – keep up the good work!

Chloe – Chloe is an expert on eggs and was able to name lots of birds! She explained to the class that sheep have lambs and not eggs.

Ava and Zara have been extremely well-organised, helpful and kind. They are always keen to offer a helping hand to Mrs Buckland and their class mates and they are really good girls – Well done.
Robyn has really impressed her teachers with her “can do” attitude this week. She has worked hard to learn her sounds and her enthusiasm to read has made Miss Melaniphy and Mrs Gilbert very happy. Well done Robyn!
Base 7 have been learning about humans and animals in Science this week.
They have been looking at the changing stages of the human lifecycle and animal lifecycle.
They have all drawn pictures representing ages of humans and talked about the differences between them.
They have looked at animals and can distinguish between an adult animal and a baby animal.
This morning they have been writing a list of questions that they have about animals and then later on they will be given a fact sheet to research and will identify if their questions can be answered using these.
We have included some photographs of some of the work they have done for you to look at.

Today Base 5 have been working on Multiplication
They have been working on a formal written method (column method) to multiply 2-digit x 1-digit numbers.
They are learning how to use the exchange method.
For example, when multiplying 25 x 2, they need to exchange or carry over a digit to get the answer, but with 24 x2 this is not necessary.
By the end of this morning, children will know that:
a) Multiplication calculations can also be represented using repeated addition
b) Understand what to do when there are ten or more ones in a column e.g. 25 x 2
c) Will be able to solve multiplication calculations that involve exchange using equipment and formal written methods.
In addition to this, it is expected that by the end of Year 3, children should know their 3,4 and 8 times times tables fluently, so it would be useful if you could practice these at home.
Children have access to an online resource called Times Tables Rockstars which will also help them practice.
We have included the link for you here.
